How to get rid of the useless default links folder in Internet Explorer

Difficulty Level:

If you're like me then you are probably really tired of seeing the LINKS folder in your Internet Explorer favorites.  I always rename it or delete it and it always used to come right back as soon as I closed my browser.  If you want to stop Windows from re-creating it every time IE starts then follow the steps below:

I created and followed these procedures on Windows XP and Windows Vista and did not have any issues.

This may also work on older Windows versions if so please let us know.

  1. Go to [Start] [Run]
  2. Type [Regedit] to launch the windows registry editor that is built in.
  3. Go to the registry key by clicking on each foler name in the registry key path:
  4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Internet Explorer\ Toolbar
  5. You will either need to create or edit the existing value data type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below:
  • Data Type: REG_SZ [String Value]
  • Value Name: LinksFolderName
  • Value Data: [Set the String Value to a blank string]

Now you can simply open Internet Explorer and delete the Links folder from Favorites Menu.  That useless and undescriptive Links folder will not be recreated ever again if you followed the directions.

Exit Registry editor tool and Reboot your computer to verify this process worked for sure.

Quick Tip:
Be careful anytime you edit things in your registry.
