ether

this may be one of the best free calling hacks ever. a new service in beta called 'ether' lets you set up an account for charging customers for talking to you. the company makes money when you charge for calls(they take 15%); but you do not have to charge. in that case you are using the service for free phone calls. the really cool part is that there are about 20 countries included for the call destination and they include india, bahrain, and UAE as well as many european countries. i have tested for calls to UK and Germany and to my great surprise cell phones are included. i just made a completely free call to a cell phone in UK.  i know that there are many people looking to call for free from UAE to india. this should be able to be done for free using the click-to-call widgets available. for calls from the USA they can be made using a toll free number. just set up an account for your phone phone and have the people you want to speak to do the same. make sure the accounts are all set to have you be 'available to take calls' also make sure that the accounts are setup so that the calls start out as free until '*' is pressed otherwise a payment will need to be made before the call can start. as long as the person receiving the call does not press '*' you can just keep on talking for free.

ether also works forwarded to UK personal numbers(+4470) from companies like eSMS, opentelecom, voipuser, etc. these numbers can than be forwarded to almost any phone number worldwide. so if you are not in one of the 22 countries served by ether you can still very likely receive calls to your phone for free.

i would really like to hear from other people who have tried ether. please share your experience here.

i did a little research and discovered that ether is owned by AT&T. if anyone can afford to cover the cost of a few free calls they can; believe me they do not pay the wholesale rates that startup VOIP carriers do so why they can terminate to euro cells, UAE, etc. there is really no reason to feel guilty about maxing out the potential on this one.
