How to play Divx Movies

Many of us have downloaded movies from the Internet. The latest trend is of course movies downloaded from Stage 6 (Divx official website) and Veoh. These movies are in .Divx format and not played by all the players.

Again you have movies in various other format, such as VCD, DVD, Ogg, Avi. Many of us use the standard Windows Media Player for playing movies, but honestly Windows Media player is only good to play VCD, even the latest version of Media player doesn't have enough functionality to use some of the high end features most of the format provide today.

The world is coming closer and we watch many non-english movies. I myself watch french and italian movies often. So if you don't know French or Italian, you of course need a tiny little sub-title at the bottom of the screen to help you understand the movie. Windows Media player does have an option but it doesnt work properly. We need something which has everything under the sun in one single software.

Lets see who does the job for us.

  1.  VideoLan: This is perhaps the best open source (GNU) Video player out there. Why its the best? coz it plays almost every single media type without hitch. However I have noticed some bugs in the 0.8.3 version. You can download their latest version which is 0.8.6c. Again VideoLan is cross platform.

It supports a large number of multimedia formats, without the need   or additional codecs

  • It can also be used as a streaming server, with extended features (video on demand, on the fly transcoding)

2. BS Player : This is another killer Video player. It's not open source and it has FREE/Paid version. The free version is capable enough to handle multiple media formats. The only issue is it can't play half-downloaded files properly.

It has an excellent feature to load subtitles and adjust time of the subtitles to match audio. You might have noticed that some subtitles don't match the audio properly. You can change these settings in BS player easily.

3. Media Player Classic : A light-weight replacement of your useless bulky media player on Windows. a built in DVD player with real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, QuickTime and RealVideo support (requires QT and/or Real player), and lots more. Its simple, lightwieght and plays most of the formats. It has one notable feature of playing half-downloaded movies with ease.

Movie Codecs & Basic Player

Some players still require you to download and install some basic movie codecs and players in order to play certain movie type. Like Stage6 requires you to have a native Divx player/Codec on your machine or online.

1. Divx Player/Codec: Required to play movies online in your favorite browser.

2. Divx Bundle: Recommended Download for playing, converting avi or other files types into high quality compressed Divx movies.

3. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack: This is another highly recommended download. Not required in most cases.

4. Veoh Player: Veoh is like Youtube, online file sharing service dedicated to Videos. You can download your favorite movies from Veoh. However you need their player to activate downloads and player does everything.

Thats's it for now. I will update this section if needed in future. If you know any open source or freeware video player, please drop comments. We can include it in the list.

Quick Tip:
Always remember to get latest codecs/players to play latest media formats
