can collection agency sue for a debt and charge interest

I am answering this question myself to help others in dillema. I owed $20000 to a credit card company and i couldn't pay on time due to job loss and then after a while a collection agency started calling me almost everyday asking me to pay off my debt. It became more of an harrassment , however, i didn't give up. They can't sue me technically for a debt but they can charge interest. I tried negotiating but it didnt work either. I am worried about my debt showing up on my credit report
